A well deserving Kent Island High School student has been chosen as the recipient of the 5th Annual Teen of Character Scholarship. The $500 scholarship, co-sponsored by the Centreville Rotary and Queen Anne’s County Character Counts!, was presented to Nichole Egerton at the Queen Anne’s County Commissioners’ Meeting on May 25, 2010.
Nomination letters were accepted from members of the community describing the character of college bound students in Queen Anne’s County. The letters were reviewed to determine which senior best exemplified the Six Pillars of Character – Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, & Citizenship.
Nichole’s nomination letter was thoughtfully written by her mother, Patricia Egerton, who described the numerous community service and after school activities Nichole has been involved in during her high school career.
While still attending high school, Nichole held a part time job each year and excelled in Field Hockey, where she held a team captain position her senior year. Nichole has also been extremely active in Girl Scouts and earned her Silver and Gold Awards through community service activities. She has also fed the homeless in Washington D.C. and delivered Thanksgiving food baskets throughout Queen Anne’s County with her church family.
Regardless of whether she is participating in Girl Scouts, Field Hockey, school or church functions, Patricia described her daughter as “respectful and courteous” and someone who “takes pride in her grades as well as helping others.” These positive character traits are visible to those who meet Nichole or have been helped through her many kind acts.
Nichole will be attending Salisbury University in the fall of 2010 and says she is “looking forward to experiencing new things in all different fields of study.” Although Nichole readily admits that she had all the Pillars of Character incorporated into her life through her extracurricular activities, she feels her biggest influence to become a person of good character was her parents. Her father, Herbert Egerton, showed her the importance of fairness and responsibility, while her mother showed her how to be a caring person.
The Character Counts! Advisory Council would like to congratulate Nichole Egerton on her achievements and wish her the best of luck in her college career!
