This summer over 560 readers participated in the Kent Island Branch of the Queen Anne’s County Free Library’s “Make a Splash–Read” summer reading program for children and “Make Waves” summer reading challenge for teens.
To celebrate the accomplishments of these young readers, the library will be giving one free book to each summer reader, from babies to teens, through Friday, July 30. Children should bring their reading logs or game boards to the library to receive their final stickers, book, and a certificate of completion. Teens should bring their reading logs and add their final page tallies to the scoreboard.
In the second annual teen summer reading challenge, 85 teens have read over 40,000 pages with the middle school currently leading by just 1000 pages over the high school team. The winner will likely be determined during the final “Make Waves” party of the summer, from 2:30 until 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 28. The party is open to all rising 6th-12th graders and will feature Xbox games, Legos, crafts, and snacks.
Because area baseball teams also support summer reading, children and teens may also pick up free tickets to the August 20 Bowie Baysox game and the August 16 Baltimore Orioles game, while supplies last.
Entry coupons for a one-year family membership to Port Discovery Children’s Museum will be accepted at the Kent Island Library through 4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 30. The prize is made available by the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore.
“Make a Splash” storytimes for ages birth through 5 conclude this Thursday, July 29 at 10:30 a.m. with stories, activities, and a craft about boats.
Additional information about library programming is available at the libraries and on the library’s website, www.quan.lib.md.us.
