On Wednesday, July 8 from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m., the Kent Island Library will host the first of two “Express Yourself” parties for teen summer readers. The event will feature the Xbox games “Dance, Dance Revolution” and “Guitar Hero” along with creative arts and snacks.

All students entering 6th through 12th grades are invited. Over 70 teens have already signed up to participate in the library’s first summer reading competition, in which adults from the library and local middle schools have created Team Library to challenge Team Teen to see who can read more pages this summer. So far, Team Library leads by 4000 pages.

Team Teen is comprised of all the middle and high school students who join the library’s
Express Yourself summer reading club. Teens may continue to join “Team Teen” by picking up their official “Express Yourself” reading log at the Kent Island Library, 200 Library Circle, Stevensville.

Through August 7, team members record the titles of books they read along with total number of pages completed and then return to the library to have new page counts added to the scoreboard in the teen section of the Kent Island Library.

Librarian Julie Ranelli admits that Team Library could lose the comfortable lead they have maintained all summer after teens bring their reading logs to the July 8 party. The library staff, however, believes they can keep the score competitive.

Also reading for Team Library are Stevensville Middle School media specialist Sandra Bicksler, library assistant Nancy Lipsner and reading teacher Jeff Harbour, and Matapeake Middle School media specialist Lois Harrison.

The second “Express Yourself” party will be held on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 5, also from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m.

“We hope the teens will tell us what kind of creative arts they would like to try at our parties,” said Ranelli. Options include Gocks (goth sock puppets), hardware or rubber band jewelry, duct tape wallets, coffee art, and mosaic journals.

Additional information about summer reading is available at the library or by calling (410) 643-8161 or visiting the library’s website, www.quan.lib.md.us.
