The Queen Anne’s County Commissioners last week approved a finalized budget for the county for FY2018. I am very happy to let you know that they decided to include in that budget $325,000 for the planning and design of an expansion of the Kent Island library. This matches the funding provided by the State of Maryland and will allow plans to add more meeting spaces, grow the children’s section, and increase quiet spaces to move forward in the coming year.
It is clear that the Commissioners understood the message from all of you who attended budget meetings, wrote letters, and/or sent emails on this issue: The library is a vital community hub, essential to educational, civic, and economic life in the county, and investing in this institution is a smart decision for the whole county. Thank you for raising your voices on this issue!
It will be exciting to watch this project move forward, and the Friends of the Library look forward to supporting the library with the expansion efforts. As always, we encourage library supporters who are not yet members of the Friends of the Library to join the organization to help advocate for the library and to raise money to help the library achieve its crucial mission.
