KIHS Visual Arts Teen of the Week—Daphne Taylor

Daphne Taylor, a 10th-grade student at Kent Island High School, has quickly distinguished herself as an exceptional visual artist. Currently enrolled in 3D Studio Art I, Daphne previously completed 2D Studio Art I as a freshman, excelling in both courses while producing an impressive and thoughtful body of work. Her artistic achievements have already been recognized through participation in ArtScene, KIHS’s annual student art exhibition.
Beyond the classroom, Daphne’s talent continues to gain attention. She has been commissioned by friends to create custom drawings—a testament to her growing reputation as an artist and the confidence others have in her creative abilities. Known for her outstanding craftsmanship, originality, and imaginative ideas, Daphne creates work that reflects a deep emotional connection to her art, making her a truly inspiring young artist.
When asked if she plans to continue studying art, Daphne responds enthusiastically: “Of course—I love art!” Her passion has been evident from an early age. According to her mother, Candice Taylor, “She has been interested in anything and everything artistic from the time she’s been able to hold a crayon. And above all, as with any great artist… music, theatrical or otherwise… she found her own very personal style at an extremely young age, and for that, I couldn’t be more proud.”
Daphne is not afraid to take creative risks—something that can be especially challenging for students at this stage of their artistic development. While she may be quiet in the classroom, her work speaks volumes. A closer look at her art, particularly her cartoons, reveals a sharp wit and a wonderfully developed sense of humor that brings her ideas to life.
Her art teacher, Estelle Szczerba, who nominated her for this spotlight shares, “Daphne is one of those students who can create successfully in any medium. While she has a strong preference for two-dimensional work—especially drawing—she admitted at the beginning of the semester that she was unsure about working with sculpture. Since then, we’ve explored papier-mâché, cardboard, and clay, and every project she has produced has been outstanding in both craftsmanship and creativity. It has been a joy to watch her style evolve and grow as she works across both 2D and 3D media.”
Through her dedication, creativity, and willingness to explore new artistic challenges, Daphne Taylor exemplifies the talent and promise of Queen Anne’s County Public Schools’ young artists—and she is very deserving of being a QACPS “Visual Arts Teen of the Week”.
