9th Annual White-A-Thon Benefiting Caroline County Habitat for Humanity

Bargain shopping has become a necessity for many area families. However, it is rare find to discover a deep discount, an excellent value and the chance to give back all wrapped in one. One area dental practice has a long-standing tradition of doing just that. For the past nine years Smiles By Holsinger & Higgins, 10646 River Road, Denton, has provided teeth whitening, one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry services available, to area residents at more than the half price with all proceeds going to Caroline County Habitat for Humanity.

This year’s “White-A-Thon” will take place on Thursday, May 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. Since its inception, the event has raised more than $37,971.00 for Caroline Habitat. During the event Drs. Higgins and Holsinger and their staff donate their time to fit patients for custom whitening trays for upper and lower teeth. The whitening kits, which usually cost $526.00, will be discounted to $200.00 for this special benefit event. Appointments are not necessary. Walk-ins are welcome. Participants must be at least 16-years-old.

“The economy is taking a toll on families and non-profits,” says Patricia A. Higgins, D.D.S. “The White-A-Thon presents a great opportunity to purchase a customized whitening kit at more than half price while also helping a worthy cause. It is truly a win-win for area consumers and the community,” she adds.

House in a Box program
This year’s event will support the homes at Lake Creek Court, a major subdivision in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Federalsburg. The program is based on Habitat’s “Operation Home Delivery,” better known as “House in a Box,” which was used to expedite the construction of homes for the families devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

When completed Lake Creek Court will be a neighborhood of nine affordable, single-family, three- and four-bedroom homes. The first four homes are “under roof”, three homes will be dedicated by the end of May and the two remaining homes are in the foundation stage.

The “House in a Box” program enables Caroline County Habitat for Humanity to increase its building capacity from one to four homes per year. “The Caroline County version of House in a Box has truly increased our capacity to produce more homes, thereby making a greater impact in the community,” says Tom Haney, volunteer and chairman of the fundraising committee at Caroline County Habitat for Humanity.

“Generous support from businesses like Smiles By Holsinger & Higgins provides us with the resources to continue our efforts, and is particularly meaningful this year during the recession,” says Leslie Brome, executive director, Caroline County Habitat for Humanity.
Smiles By Holsinger & Higgins opened in February 1986 and offers the convenience of comprehensive care for adult patients. They provide routine dental check-ups and cleanings as well as cosmetic enhancements to improve the appearance of crooked, chipped, unevenly spaced, or stained teeth. Since 2001 Smiles By Holsinger & Higgins has also provided sedation dentistry for the fearful patient or for those patients who wish to combine multiple procedures in fewer appointments.

Caroline County Habitat for Humanity is a locally run non-profit affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. All donations from the White-A-Thon will go towards construction materials for building houses for families in need in the county.
