AAUW (American association of University Women) Easton Branch will sponsor a trip to Nemours Mansion and Gardens in Wilmington, Delaware and luncheon at the duPont Country Club on Saturday May 9th, 2009.
Completed in 1910, Nemours is the grandest residence ever constructed in Delaware, and its gardens are still the finest example in North American of a formal French garden. The mansion was designed by the world-famous architects, Carrere and Hastings, and its five floors encompass 47,000 square feet of space (fully one acre under a roof). It is furnished with an eclectic collection of rare furniture and great art, yet visitors still come away knowing they visited a “home.” The grounds cover 222 acres, and the main vista was inspired by Le Petit Trianon at Versailles.
Cost of $85 includes bus transportation, a 2 hour tour of three floors of the mansion, a bus tour through the gardens, and a gourmet buffet luncheon at the exclusive duPont Country Club.
The bus leaves Easton from the old Lowes parking lot at 8:30 AM and returns at 5:00 PM.
Proceeds from the trip benefit the Easton Branch AAUW Mature Woman’s Grant. This grant provides assistance to Eastern Shore women, over the age of 25, who need funds to return to school for an advanced, baccalaureate or certificate degree.
The AAUW mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research.
