Art Around the World

Young people ages 7 to 12 have a terrific opportunity to create art while also learning about the culture and geography of countries all over the world. With a hands-on overview of maps, flags, and national costumes of each featured country, students will enjoy learning about West Africa while creating masks, fabric arts, or good luck charms. They’ll explore Latin America with yarn pictures or Tree of Life sculptures. Students will also participate in an “Around the World” student art exhibit this June at the Arts Council’s Centre for the Arts gallery. The fall course kicks off an international art focus at the Queen Anne’s County Arts Council’s Centre for the Arts. This five-week class begins Tuesday, September 23, from 4:30-6pm. The cost is $50 and $40 for Arts Council members. The deadline for registration is September 16.

Instructor Nancy Kelly has taught students of various ages in a variety of venues, including colleges and neighborhood groups. She holds graduate and undergraduate degrees from Temple University, Glassboro and Georgian Court College, and has studied with Shakespeare scholar Donald McGinn. She is the author of “Help! There’s a Toddler in the House!”

The Center for the Arts classes are designed to renew existing artistic interests, and to develop new skills. Registration materials are available at 206 South Commerce St. in Centreville, MD Tuesday-Friday from 9am to 5pm and Saturday from 10am to 2pm, or by calling 410-758-2520, online,, or request via email at
