Grasonville Senior Center is pleased to announce a new Craft Design and Production class with emphasis on Baltimore Screen Painting. This course will teach the production and marketing of Baltimore Screen Paintings. Certified Instructor, Tina Williams, will offer the classes January 9 – March 13, 2009 from 1:00 to 4:00pm. Baltimore Screen Painting students will learn the history of the original artisans who traveled the Baltimore neighborhoods of Canton, Little Italy, Highland Town, and other areas. Handout materials on some of the history will be available for reading. Two historical videos The Screen Painter and How to Paint a Baltimore Screen will also be featured. Included in the course will be basic drawing design as well as demonstration of methods and techniques used by some of the few living screen painters today. This art work which was invented for practical purposes some time ago is now being sought after for its decorative flair. An example of a painted screen is on display at the center as well a list of supplies needed. Items can be purchased from any craft or art supply store in the local area. The cost of supplies can vary based on quality of paint and brushes purchased. Some supplies may be provided through the center for a nominal fee. Winter classes are offered by Chesapeake College and cost just $10.00. Students may take additional classes at no extra cost. Registration is limited to seniors aged 60 or better and advance registration is recommended. Grasonville Senior Center is located at 4802 Main Street, Grasonville.
