“Thursdays in the Park”, the Queen Anne’s County Arts Council’s free summer concert series began this year with a downpour. Luckily, Kent Island Band director Fred Hughes was to able turn a rehearsal date into a new concert date, and the band will play at Millstream Park in Centreville, on Tuesday, July 14 at 7 p.m.
This versatile, top-notch band has gained a loyal following in the region and will turn you into a fan if you’ve never had the pleasure of hearing them before. Formed in 1994, the band performs on Kent Island and the surrounding Maryland Eastern Shore area. As is the tradition with community bands, the group includes musicians from all walks of life, and traverses a number of musical styles. Their repertoire includes marches, classic concert band standards and Broadway favorites.
Under the skillful direction of Hughes, the band has evolved into a professional level group, sought after for special events and concerts year-round. Hughes has performed, conducted and presented workshops throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia. By the young age of 25, he had already been long recognized as an up and coming conductor and World Class jazz pianist for his work with the First Army Band in Fort Meade, Maryland and the Eighth Army Band in Seoul, Korea. His conducting credits include the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, Atlanta and Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestras, Washington and Lyric Opera Orchestras and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
The Thursdays in the Park series is presented by the Queen Anne’s County Arts Council, the Maryland State Arts Council, and the United Way of Queen Anne’s County. This concert is being sponsored by Congressman Frank M. Kratovil, and Dr. James J. Lucas, D.D.S. Door prizes are provided by Prime Outlets in Queenstown, with media sponsorship by Tidewater Trader. Bring blankets or chairs; concert goers may bring in picnic fare. The performance begins at 7 pm and will be held rain or shine.
