Tred Avon Players continues its season with the light domestic comedy/romance, Neil Simons’ “Barefoot in the Park,” opening October 23. One of the earliest plays by Neil Simon, it was first produced in 1963, and is set in that time period. The comedy was by the early days of Simon’s marriage at the time and became his first major hit. The show directed by Mike Nichols, ran for 1530 performances at the Biltmore Theater. The cast included Robert Redford and Elizabeth Ashley as the young couple in their first weeks of married life in their small Greenwich Village apartment.

The couple has many challenges to face as well as an eccentric neighbor and a meddling mother. Nichols won the Tony for Best Director of a Play, and Simon was nominated for Best Play. Simon made his screenwriting debut from his Broadway hit, winning a Writer’s Guild Award nomination for best screenplay. The movie released in 1967 stars Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, and Charles Boyer. Mildred Natwick was nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actress depicting the interfering mother. Neil Simon grew up in the Bronx in New York City. He began by writing scripts along with his brother for radio and television in 1948. His sketches for Phil Silvers, Gary Moore and Jerry Lewis are legendary.

“Barefoot in the Park” was first performed on the TAP stage in June 1989 directed by Teddy Hogle. The original cast included Robin Hogle, his daughter as Corrie, Bob Tull as Paul Bratter, Alex Handy as the telephone repairman, Bill Tull was the delivery man and stage manager. Betty Dorbin portrayed the meddling mother and Ken Smith played Victor Velasko. Langrell’s rendition will feature a few of TAP’s experienced and well-known cast members. Bruce Grove will portray Paul Bratter, with Katie Cox as his young wife, Corrie; Rob Sanchez as Victor Velasco; Anna Kusinitz as Corrie’s mother; Patrick Fee as the telephone repairman, and Zack Schlag as the delivery man.

The producer is Lisa Roth; the Stage Manager, Sally Woodall; Assistant Stage Manager is Molly Wilson; light design by Jon Hanbury, and the scenic design and construction is by Lawrie Jessup. The show will play Friday and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m., October 23 through November 8. Opening night, October 23 features free champagne and snacks at 7PM. Dinner theater will be Saturday October 24. A special Thrifty Thursday evening show is set for November 5 at 7:00. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students with ID.
