Breast Center Begins Renovations

Shore Regional Breast Center located at The Memorial Hospital at Easton has completed the first phase of a renovation project designed to double the size of the center for patient and staff comfort and efficiency.

The Breast Center entrance is now conveniently located off of the main lobby of the hospital across from the Information Desk. Visitors enter the center through a newly decorated reception area. On display is a mosaic mural created by a group of breast cancer survivors in 2006.

Nurse Coordinator Mary Jane Flynn, BSN, RN, OCN, and her staff now have private offices in which to meet with patients when they come for information, counseling and treatment follow up.

The new Breast Cancer Resource Center is stocked with books, magazines and DVDs on the subject of breast cancer prevention and treatment. The comfortable room provides privacy for family conferences and is wired for Internet access to expand the reference sources available to staff, patients and their family members.

Technological upgrades have also been implemented as part of the Breast Center’s expansion. The center’s physicians, Jerry Batley, MD, medical director of the Breast Center, and Brooke Buckley, MD, use portable laptop computers to access patient records and to make notes during each visit. Because Shore Health System uses digital technology to perform mammograms at all facilities, the physicians can use their laptops in an exam room to view a patient’s mammogram with her and to compare the image to mammograms previously taken.

The second phase of the project now underway involves constructing new offices for Dr. Batley and Dr. Buckley and adding a third patient exam room. When the project is complete in May, the facility will be bright with new paint and flooring and ample storage for supplies used for community outreach education and clinical services.
