The Centreville High School Alumni Association got a big boost for its scholarship program thanks to the generosity of a 1932 graduate of Centreville High School who died in February 2008. In her will, Dr. Elizabeth Hagen donated $100,000 to the CHS Alumni Association to create an endowment fund to support the association’s scholarship program. The endowment was announced May 9 at the annual CHS Alumni Dinner Reunion at Queen Anne’s County High School. Several of Hagen’s family members attended, and a plaque was unveiled in honor of Dr. Hagen. The CHS Alumni Association also recognized a $5,000 donation to the scholarship fund from the estate of L. Kennard Rhodes. A Queenstown native and 1930 graduate of Centreville High School, he received a bachelor’s degree from Western Maryland College and a master’s degree in education from the University of Maryland. Rhodes was a longtime educator who moved to Florida after he retired. He died in September 2000.

The CHS Alumni Association began its scholarship program in 1986 with scholarships awarded to children and grandchildren of CHS graduates. Between 1986 and 2008, the alumni association awarded 110 regular scholarships and 48 special scholarships. The Elizabeth P. Hagen, Class of 1932, Scholarship was awarded to Emily C. Smith of Queenstown, a senior at Queen Anne’s County High School accepted by the University of Maryland-College Park. The L. Kennard Rhodes, Class of 1930, Scholarships were awarded to: Chad D. Clark of Denton, a senior at North Caroline High School accepted by the University of Maryland-College Park; Sarah Elizabeth Covington of Centreville, a senior at Queen Anne’s County High School accepted by the University of Richmond; Lindsay Dodd of Queenstown, a senior at Queen Anne’s County High School accepted by Washington College; Sarah Anne Hoopes of Kennett Square, Pa., a senior at Unionville High School accepted by Elon College; and, Elizabeth Anne Wagstaff of Centreville, a senior at Queen Anne’s County High School, accepted by the University of Maryland-College Park.
