Centreville Deacon Charged With Embezzelment

Maryland State Police charged 60-year-old deacon Kenneth Hanbury of Centreville with embezzling more than $30,000 from a Centreville church where he was the bookkeeper. According to police, the investigation began in 2006 after questionable transactions were found in the financial records of Our Mother of Sorrows Parish. Authorities say Hanbury used a signature stamp to write checks to reimburse himself for unauthorized expenses and used church funds to pay his relatives’ utility bills. Police reportedly found suspicious changes in weekly offerings to the church.
