On Thursday, September 17, the community is invited for a rare behind-the-scenes look at the newly expanded and renovated emergency department at Dorchester General Hospital. The celebration begins at 10:00 a.m. with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Guests can tour the emergency department until 11:30 a.m. and enjoy refreshments with the physicians and staff who provide emergency services for residents of Dorchester County and the surrounding area.
The grand opening celebration will be hosted by Joseph P. Ross, president and CEO for Shore Health System. Cambridge Mayor Victoria Jackson-Stanley and other special guests are expected to speak.
The DGH emergency department construction project began in June of 2008 and has progressed through five phases while maintaining around-the-clock services. The ED was last renovated in 1991. Since then, demand for emergency department services in Dorchester County has doubled, with more than 19,500 ED visits between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009. The total cost of the project is expected to exceed $3 million. Support from state legislators secured $500,000 in funding for the project from the State of Maryland.
The project added approximately 1,500 square feet to expand the emergency department from 11 to 16 patient treatment areas. Renovations included the installation of a larger, centrally located nursing station and the addition of two private triage rooms where nurses assess the level of care required for individuals who come to the ED. New lighting, paint, flooring and ceilings have been installed to provide a more pleasant and quiet environment for staff and patients.
Three waiting areas have been combined into one larger space for visitors to the ED, people coming to the hospital for lab tests and participants in the Center for Cardio-Pulmonary Fitness and Wellness program. Emergency Medical Services personnel now have a secured area for medications and supplies used in their ambulances.
Dorchester General Hospital is located at 300 Byrn Street in Cambridge. For more information about the grand opening celebration and to RSVP, call 410-228-5511 or 410-822-1000, ext. 5222.
