The Auxiliary of Dorchester General Hospital is now taking applications for scholarships from the Nursing Grant Fund. Established in 1978, the fund assists qualified individuals who are studying for a nursing career. The grant covers the cost of tuition, books and other educational expenses.
The DGH Auxiliary Nursing Grant Committee selects applicants based on several criteria, including financial need, academic accomplishments, work experience, references and a written statement from the applicant. Qualified applicants must have completed their pre-requisites for a two-year nursing program or have completed their first year of a four-year college or university. They also must have a B or better grade average.
The Auxiliary plans to award five nursing grants in 2009. A $2,000 donation from the Dorchester Ruritan Club will fund two $1,000 scholarships. The DGH Auxiliary raised money from its annual membership appeal and from fundraising activities to offer an additional two $1,000 scholarships. A donation from the Cambridge Elk’s Club #1272 will fund a $750 nursing grant.
Debbie Thomas, chair of the DGH Auxiliary Nursing Grant Committee, says, “Donations from area organizations and members of the community make it possible for us to carry on the important mission of assisting men and women who will complete their nursing education and make careers at our community hospital.”
Application forms are available at the Dorchester General Hospital Hospitality Shop, 300 Byrn Street, Cambridge. Students who have previously been awarded grants from the Auxiliary are welcome to re-apply.
Submit applications by May 29 to Debbie Thomas, 304 Academy Street, Unit 201, Cambridge, Maryland 21613. Transcripts must be mailed to the same address in a sealed envelope from the college or university by June 12.
