An emu, a non-native flightless bird, was seen in the Chincoteague national Wildlife Refuge. Refuge manager Lou Hinds said they had no idea who the bird belonged to and that a refuge biologist was concerned the bird could be carrying a disease. The fugitive emu was tracked down and euthanized. Later workers determined the bird had escaped from its owner who lives on Chincoteague and found its way to the refuge. The emu is the largest bird native to Australia.
