“Investigation of the fatal crash involving Chief Charles “”Buck”” Clough Jr. on April 15th has been completed and reviewed by States Attorney Lance Richardson.
The investigation has found that Chief 6 from the Sudlersville Fire Company driven by Chief Clough was going south on Sudlersville Cemetery enroute to a fire call with emergency equipment activated. As the Chief’s vehicle approached the intersection with Duhamel Corner Road, a 1998 Subaru station wagon driven by Charles Leager of Sudlersville was turning left from Duhamel Corner Road with intentions of going south also, entered Clough’s intended path.
As Chief Clough crested a hill just prior to the intersection, he had the Subaru in his traffic lane. Mr. Leager, upon seeing the flashing lights coming at his rear, slowed or stopped in the roadway causing Clough to make evasive maneuvers. Chief 6 entered the north bound lane attempting to avoid a collision, losing traction on the wet road and then turned sideways, leaving the roadway and striking a large tree.
Both drivers were limited in their ability to see each other in time due to the varying degrees of elevations in the area of the intersection. Extensive rain fall during the day and with dusk approaching were additional factors.”
