The Queen Anne’s County Commissioners joined the county Department of Aging and the county Department of Housing and Community Services in today’s dedication ceremonies at the Foxxtown Senior Housing complex and the Sudlersville Senior Center.

“The perception is that not enough happens in northern Queen Anne’s County,” said Peter Scanlon, director of Housing and Community Services. The northern part of the county is getting some well deserved attention and the facility is a real asset to the town of Sudlersville, he said.

Scanlon and Cathy Willis, director of Aging, presided over the dedication ceremonies, which included town, county and state officials, residents of Foxxtown, and members of the community. This is the second collaborative effort between the two departments; the first one was at Terrapin Grove and the PercyThomas Senior Center on Kent Island.

Both Willis and Scanlon gave much of the credit to former colleagues, like Sue Leager, past director of the Department of Aging who was at the dedication, and officials from both county and state agencies.

“These projects don’t just fall out of the sky, it takes a dream and a vision, and the vision of our department heads like Sue, Cathy and Pete,” said County Commissioner Paul Gunther. “All the work is done behind the scenes and we just get to cut the ribbon,” he said.

County Commissioner Courtney Billups echoed Gunther’s comments. “A tremendous number of people were behind the scenes and we get this beautiful facility which fills a…need for affordable housing, particularly for our seniors,” said Billups.

The Foxxtown Senior Housing complex has 38 one bedroom and three two bedroom apartments with rents ranging from $425 to $495 monthly. The Sudlersville Senior Center has a state of the art kitchen, computer lab, ceramics and exercise rooms, a game room and a library and lounge area.

Funding for the complex came from the Maryland Department of Aging, the Partnership Rental Housing Funds for Maryland, a Community Development Block Grant, the Maryland Affordable Housing Trust, the Queen Anne’s County Housing Authority and the Queen Anne’s County government.
