The Grasonville VFW post 7464 is reeling after last week’s overnight break-in. Slot machines were damaged beyond repair; the main safe was burned open with a torch; and, more than $20,000 in cash was stolen. Total damage exceeded $30,000 not including the stolen money. Post Commander Jim Sala says the robbers knew what they were looking for and knew how to go about getting it. All wires leading into the building, including the phones, alarm system and cable TV, were cut.
On January 8, burglars also broke into the Moose Lodge on Route 18 causing about $1,000 damage. When deputies arrived, they found several doors and a window open. Someone had damaged ceiling tiles trying to disarm the video surveillance system. There was no word on whether anything was taken.
