“Jeffrey C. Woodworth, Headmaster of Gunston Day School in Centreville, Maryland, died suddenly on May 6, 2009. He was 58 years old. Born in Newton, Massachusetts September 23, 1950, Mr. Woodworth is survived by his wife Suzanne, and two daughters Alexandra and Kristin. He was predeceased by his parents Virginia and John Woodworth and his brother Todd.

Mr. Woodworth graduated from Boston College and Harvard University. He started his career in education as a science teacher at the Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall School in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later became Director of Finance and Development and Assistant Headmaster at the Bancroft School in Worcester, Massachusetts. Mr. Woodworth founded Pacific Northern Academy in Anchorage, Alaska in 1993 developing strategic plans, writing the curriculum, and raising funds. He then went on to become Head of Episcopal School in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was also an accomplished businessman having founded several businesses, including the “”Fortunate Occasions”” greeting line and Dobbs in Boston.

Mr. Woodworth assumed responsibility as the fifth Head of School of Gunston Day School in 2000. Highly respected by both faculty and students, Mr. Woodworth was a visionary as a headmaster. He was responsible for increasing enrollment, developing the school’s campus, most notably the renovation of the Middleton House, and securing the school’s finances. He also honed the school philosophy and implemented many new school policies and procedures. Mr. Woodworth was a Board member of the Corsica River Conservancy and a member of the finance committee of Shore Health Systems.

In addition to his wife and daughters, he is survived by his sister Pamela Shaw of Needham, Massachusetts, his great-nephew Jeffrey Todd Santos of Centreville, Maryland, and two nieces, Lisa Bolstad of Salem, Massachusetts, and Jennifer Hollowell of Charlotte, North Carolina and their families. An avid sailor, golfer, and musician, Mr. Woodworth was committed to enhancing the quality of education. He believed that one’s accomplishments were directly related to one’s willingness to take risks. He was deeply committed to his family, his students, and to his community, and he will be missed for his many unselfish acts of kindness and his wonderful sense of humor.
