The University of Maryland Cooperative Extension is offering a one-day regional workshop for grape growers in Maryland. This course continues where the New Grower Workshops left off, offering a detailed description of viticultural practices for commercial vineyards. Topics will include managing and following vineyard expenses, canopy management (including pruning, shoot thinning, and vine training), crop management (including estimation, cluster thinning, and sampling), vineyard floor management (including herbicides), making harvest decisions, and of course, pest management (equipment, insects, and diseases). This seminar is a good overview of what is involved in producing high quality fruit in Maryland. Speakers will include Extension Educators and Specialists from Maryland Cooperative Extension as well as consultants and commercial vineyard mangers in Maryland.
If you are considering planting a vineyard, or you have just recently done so, you will benefit from the information provided in this course. The workshop is classroom format with a lot of time for Q&A. The cost of the seminar has been reduced to $35 for Maryland residents ($75 for non-residents) thanks to subsidies from the grants from the MWA/MGGA via the Governor’s Commission on Grapes and Wine.
