Kent County Teachers Miffed At Budget Woes

The money crunch is hitting Kent County’s Board Of Education. The school board must pull $2-million off the table to make ends meet. Superintendent Dr. Barbara Wheeler is recommending two day furloughs for all employees and a pay freeze for everyone. The Teacher’s Association is not happy, nor are a lot of teachers. Dr. Wheeler says if they cannot agree on furloughs and a pay freeze, then layoffs would be next. The last time these kinds of problems existed was about 18 years ago when teachers responded with a work-to-rule action, only working hours set in the contract and leaving work unfinished.
