Thursdays in the Park, is normally held on – you guessed it, Thursdays. The Kent Island Band was originally scheduled to start off the free summer concert series in June, but bad weather forced a change of plans. The concert will now be held on Tuesday, July 14 at Millstream Park in Centreville, a really great way to start off your week. This versatile group are adept at satisfying many a music lovers ears.
Formed in 1994, the band performs on Kent Island and the surrounding Maryland Eastern Shore area. As is the tradition with community bands, the group includes musicians from all walks of life, and traverses a number of musical styles. Their repertoire includes marches, classic concert band standards and Broadway favorites.
Under the skillful direction of conductor Fred Hughes, the band has evolved into a professional level group, who are sought after for special events and concerts year-round. Hughes has performed, conducted and presented workshops throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia. By the young age of 25, he had already been long recognized as an up and coming conductor and World Class jazz pianist for his work with the First Army Band in Fort Meade, Maryland and the Eighth Army Band in Seoul, Korea. His conducting credits include the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, Atlanta and Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestras, Washington and Lyric Opera Orchestras and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Concerts begin at 7 pm. The series is presented by the Queen Anne’s County Arts Council and sponsored by the Maryland State Arts Council, the United Way of Queen Anne’s County, Congressman Frank Kratovil, and Dr. James Lucas. Door prizes are provided by Prime Outlets of Queenstown, and media sponsorship has been provided by Tidewater Trader. Bring blankets or chairs; picnicking is encouraged, food is available for sale at this location. Concerts will be held rain or shine.
