Three generations of singers and a rich family history combine to form a gospel group that is beyond compare. The Burke Family’s acappella performance brings strong voices, the muffled tap of feet and staccato clap of hands to their vibrant sopranos, rich altos, deep basses and pure tenors. Whether they are performing a camp-ground hymn or traditional spiritual, audiences love their inspired and inspiring concerts.
Based in Delaware, with family members throughout the state and region, the group has played in venues as varied as the Library of Congress, the National Folk Life Festival and concerts in Europe. Now celebrating their 37th anniversary, they happily note that they are “…moving beyond the era when we performed for gas money…” and are recording live and studio performances. Their latest CD “On Faith” was released in March 2008.
Their performance will be held on August 6 at Millstream Park in Centreville, Maryland and is the fifth of six concerts in the “Thursdays in the Park” free summer concert series. Concerts begin at 7 pm. The series is presented by the Queen Anne’s County Arts Council and sponsored by the Maryland State Arts Council, the United Way of Queen Anne’s County, Congressman Frank Kratovil, and Dr. James Lucas.
