As part of the Queen Anne County Free Library’s teen summer reading club, librarians and teachers from Kent Island challenge teens to a reading competition to see which team can read the most pages this summer.

Beginning on Monday, June 15, teens join “Team Teen” by picking up their official “Express Yourself” reading log at the Kent Island Library. From June 15 through August 7, Team Teen and Team Library will record the titles of books they read along with the total number of pages completed.

A scoreboard in the teen section of the Kent Island Library will show the teams’ progress throughout the summer.

So far “Team Library” includes children’s/teen librarian Julie Ranelli, public services librarian Kristin Bombard, Stevensville Middle School media specialist Sandra Bicksler, library assistant Nancy Lipsner and reading teacher Jeff Harbour, and Matapeake Middle School media specialist Lois Harrison.

“Team Teen” will be comprised of all the middle and high school students who join the library’s Express Yourself summer reading club.

“You’re going to lose,” said parent Cindy Lively to Ranelli as she described the challenge. “These kids have nothing to do all summer but read books.”

Team Library believes they are up to the challenge.

In order to check the progress of both teams and share status updates, the Kent Island Library will host two Express Yourself parties this summer, featuring the Xbox games “Dance, Dance Revolution” and “Guitar Hero” along with creative arts, music, and edible treats. Parties will be held on the afternoons of Wednesday, July 8 and Wednesday, August 5.
