NEW EXHIBIT – KIFA – June 2008

The Kent Island Federation of Arts (KIFA) is proud to announce the opening of a new exhibit this June titled “The Fine Art of Food”. The exhibit will draw from the diverse range of artists within its membership, as well as those throughout the Eastern Shore and across the Bay to Anne Arundel County.

The theme of food as a painterly subject had its beginnings with the European Dutch masters who painted elaborate and realistic renditions of fruits, meats, and wines. Some expounded on the interior of home life centered on the dining table.

In the 19th century, a new wave of artists…Cezanne, Matisse and Picasso…put their own spin on the art world with their stylized depictions of the “still-life”. Vignettes of restaurants, cafes and pubs were popularized.

As the 20th century gave way to an industrialized, technology-based world, packaged food became a metaphor for psychologically-based artists like Andy Warhol and his use of Campbell Soup cans.

Using food as an art medium has become an exhibition of huge proportions with South Koreas’ Sang-Wook Lee. His use of ramen noodles to construct 3-dimensional edifices of ancient architecture is a statement to man’s inner connection to food and civilization.

This exhibit is indeed a celebration of the Fine Art of Food. It will be comprised of both two- and three-dimensional works, and will be judged by Easton-based artist David Grafton. Stevensville restaurants Rustico and Kentmorr will be donating the menu for the opening reception.

The opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, June 7th, from 4PM to 7PM, at KIFA’s gallery (405 Main Street, Stevensville, MD.).

The public is welcomed, and serious art enthusiasts and patrons are encouraged to attend. In keeping with the spirit of the show’s theme, KIFA is asking that attendees bring canned goods and other non-perishables to the reception: At the end of the exhibit KIFA will donate all that it has received to the local food bank.

Show dates: Friday, June 6th thru Sunday, June 29th
