On, Sunday, June 7, Shore Health System hosts a celebration of National Cancer Survivors Day. The luncheon will be held at Sailwinds Park in Cambridge from noon until 3:00 p.m.
The event is a celebration of life which honors individuals who are living with a history of cancer. This year’s theme is “Rolling Out the Red Carpet of Survivorship.” Cancer survivors and a guest are invited to dress up for an afternoon of fun and entertainment that begins with photos on the red carpet as they arrive.
Festivities include an elegant lunch catered by Simply Gourmet and served by members of the Elks Clubs from Dorchester Lodge #223, Progressive of Dorchester #224, Samuel T. Hemsley Lodge #974 and Bright with Pride Temple #1275. Guests will be entertained with dancing, song, magic and comedy along with inspirational messages from the American Cancer Society. Guest speaker is cancer survivor Alvin Sanger. The celebration will close with the traditional roll call of the survivors in attendance, during which they will each be presented with a gift. Guests will also be eligible for door prizes for sporting events, movie passes, theatre tickets and other gifts.
A cancer survivor is anyone living with a history of cancer from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life, according to the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation, which reports that 10 million Americans are cancer survivors. Major advances in cancer prevention, early detection and treatment have resulted in longer survival.
Reservations for the National Cancer Survivor Day celebration are required. For more information and to register, call Shore Regional Cancer Center at 410-820-6800 by Monday, June 1.
