New Therapy Keeps People Active as They Heal

Physical therapy specialists at Shore Rehabilitation Services are now certified to offer the ASTYM™ system, a rehabilitation technique with documented effectiveness in the treatment of soft tissue injuries related to trauma, surgery or repetitive stress. The ASTYM system is effective for new injuries as well as chronic, nagging conditions.

Use of the ASTYM system has proven to be an effective treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome, lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), medial epicondylitis (golfer’s elbow), Achilles tendonitis and other chronic injuries. The system is also used to help alleviate scarring that can occur after a traumatic injury or surgery, and often provides relief when other treatments have failed.

Shore Health System’s certified ASTYM system practitioners are Damon Cawley, PT, a physical therapist based at the Easton Outpatient Center; physical therapist Jonnice Stewart, PT, at the Centreville Outpatient Center; physical therapist DJ Murray, PT, at the Denton Outpatient Center; and physical therapy assistant Terry Volmer, PTA, at the Cambridge Outpatient Center. They are the only physical therapy specialists on the Eastern Shore certified to use the ASTYM system.

Practitioners certified in ASTYM therapy use specially designed instruments to evaluate and treat damaged tissue. Cawley explains, “The hard plastic tools we use allow us to smooth out muscles and go more deeply into an area than we can with our hands and fingers.”

The course of treatment also includes a customized stretching and exercise program, which supports tissue healing and helps patients return to normal activity while decreasing the risk of re-injury.
