Ocean City’s town council will consider making it mandatory to wear a helmet while riding rented scooters in the town. Maryland requires motorcyclists and bicyclists under age 16 on public property to wear helmets, but does not require helmets for people riding scooters. The ordinance is meant to ensure helmet use by renters in a year when officials say they are seeing more scooter accidents than in recent memory. Council members say they lobbied hard for state legislators to pass a mandatory helmet law for scooters, but were not successful. The council also will hear a proposal to allow three-wheeled scooters on municipal roadways.
