Pipkin Says MDTA Needs To Address Bay Bridge Issues

Eastern Shore Senator EJ Pipkin says he is concerned about a new report on inspection procedures on the Bay Bridge. The report says the Bay Bridge suffers from ‘scouring,’ another word for erosion of sand or rock surrounding bridge piers and abutments. The report says scouring is responsible for more than half the bridge failures in the US. It says MdTA needs to develop a formal plan to address that and other issues. Pipkin says until the report was released, he had never heard anything about damage below the waterline and urged MdTA to conduct key surveys and studies immediately. Pipkin says he might draft legislation forcing MdTA to do that if it dallies.
