This summer the Kent Island Library will host a new program to help children learn the value of reusing household items. Called “ROO”, short for “Repurposing Ordinary Objects,” the programs will be co-led by county resident Maureen Fleshman and children’s librarian Julie Ranelli on three Monday afternoons at 2:30 p.m.

ROO is designed for children from five to eight years old. The library opened registration for the programs earlier this month as part of its “Be Creative @ Your Library” summer reading club programming.

On June 29, participants will bring an empty soup can and decorate it in patriotic colors to create two games that can be played as children await their parades, picnics, and fireworks that holiday weekend. The program also repurposes used aluminum foil and yogurt cups.

On July 6, children will read a story about imaginative play with a box and will design and decorate their own treasure boxes using shoe boxes. On July 27, children will turn glass spaghetti sauce jars into decoupage candleholders.

Her background in education and lifelong interest in environmental issues inspired Fleshman to create a program that focuses on repurposing everyday items into works of art or classic games. Each program is designed to keep hands busy and minds creative.
