Shore Health System Joins GE Healthcare’s Women’s Health and Wellness Tour

On Saturday, June 14, Shore Health System and Wal-Mart will host the national GE Women’s Health and Wellness Tour, a custom-designed semi trailer from GE Healthcare created to help educate women about important health issues. The GE trailer will be parked at Wal-Mart, 8155 Elliott Road in Easton, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The GE Women’s Health and Wellness Tour features educational displays of the latest clinical technologies for women’s healthcare, such as digital mammography and a 4-D laptop-size fetal monitoring ultrasound unit. Healthcare professionals from Shore Health System will use GE technologies to provide free bone density and blood pressure tests and also to educate women about the importance of disease prevention and early detection. The GE trailer will also feature information about health care during pregnancy.

Breast health education will be available from Shore Regional Breast Center nurses and physicians, who will be available to discuss breast self-exams and the importance of regular breast cancer screenings. A workstation will be available at which visitors can view breast images previously acquired with digital mammography. Information about new breast magnetic resonance technology, an imaging tool used at Shore Health System for women at high risk for breast cancer, will be available.

The GE Women’s Health and Wellness Tour launched in mid-2004 and has traveled more than 200,000 miles. The national tour has made it possible for over 50,000 women to undergo testing and education for osteoporosis, heart disease and breast cancer.

“Shore Health System is excited to be among the healthcare systems partnering with GE on this nationwide event,” says Gary Bigelow, Director of Radiology Services for Shore Health System. “This impressive display gives Shore Health System the opportunity to reach out to the community with information about women’s health issues and to discuss how we can support them when they require healthcare services.”

The GE Women’s Health and Wellness Tour coincides with the addition of digital mammography at The Memorial Hospital at Easton, Dorchester General Hospital and the Diagnostic and Imaging Centers in Easton, Centreville and Denton. Bigelow says, “Implementing digital mammography is the final phase of Shore Health System’s multi-million dollar investment in digital imaging. With the transition from film to digital imaging, members of our medical staff have nearly instantaneous access to the radiology images they need to make treatment decisions. And they can view the X-rays wherever they are treating patients – in the hospitals, at their offices, even across the country.”
