Three state university presidents say they plan to join other state employees being furloughed to help close the state’s budget shortfall. University of Maryland College Park President C. Dan Mote Jr. says he plans to take five furlough days. Salisbury University President Janet Dudley-Eshbach plans to take the maximum number of furlough days the University System of Maryland permits. Towson University President Robert Caret also plans to take furlough days. University System of Maryland spokesman John Buettner says the system’s Board of Regents must authorize any university furlough plans. He says the board could discuss budget plans at its upcoming meeting at Bowie State University.
