Talbot Youth Coalition Hosts Pool Party for 70 Youth

The Talbot Youth Coalition for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention hosted a pool party on August 10, 2009 at the George Murphy Community Pool in Easton. The event, co-sponsored by the Talbot County Parks and Recreation Department, drew over 70 youth attendees. This was the first formal event planned by the Youth Coalition, whose intention is to show that there are events for kids that can be fun and alcohol/drug free.

The Youth Coalition is focused on getting area youth involved in finding solutions to Talbot County’s growing substance abuse and addictions problem. The Youth Coalition is part of an international Youth-to-Youth program which is a proven effective research-based prevention program. Youth-to-Youth programs typically include:

· A clear NO tobacco, alcohol, or any other drug policy
· Teens play the key roles in the program, agenda, activities and decisions
· Teen Issues are addressed, such as alcohol, drugs, peer pressure, sexuality, suicide, etc.
· Leadership development is stressed

The Youth Coalition is looking for new members who are interested in taking a leadership role in the community, with a special need for younger members who can help to keep the process moving forward. Youth ages 13 through 18 are invited to attend. If you are interested in helping to plan further community youth events, please contact Gary Pearce at Talbot Partnership at 410-819-8067.
