Washington College held its George Washington’s Birthday convocation by honoring three civil rights leaders including Gloria Richardson, author Taylor Branch, and former Indiana Senator Birch Bayh. Each received an honorary Doctorate. Richardson is credited with launching the first grass-roots civil rights movement north of the Deep South. Branch wrote a Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of Dr. Martin Luther King. Senator Bayh co-sponsored the Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act; the only lawmaker since The Founding Fathers to sponsor more than one amendment to the Constitution.
