Leone Y. Woodall, the beloved band director memorialized by her devoted students with a monument next to the Galena town hall, was posthumously inducted into the Maryland Music Educators Association Hall of Fame. The MMEA made the announcement earlier this month, and it becomes official at the organization’s Annual Awards of Excellence Reception at the Baltimore Convention Center on February 27.
Pennsylvania native Woodall started teaching at Galena High School in 1951 and became the school’s chorus and band director. She inspired hundreds of students with her instructional technique. Her bands performed throughout the state and won numerous awards and trophies. After her retirement in 1978, she started the Galena Alumni Marching Band. She died January 16, 1991 at the age of 73.
