Wye Parish welcomes May With a Country May Fair

May Pole dancing, a Clydesdale horse-drawn wagon through Wye Mills, and the Blessing of the Animals are all a part of Wye Parish’s annual welcome to the wonderful month of May! Join the fun at the May Fair Saturday, May 2 from 10:00 to 3:00 on the grounds of Old Wye Church on Route 662 in Wye Mills.

Throughout the day, magnificent Clydesdales will take guests on wagon rides around Wye Mills. The horses will pause at 1:00 to line up with all the other visiting animals to receive a blessing from the Parish’s Rector. Even if you don’t bring a pet, the Blessing of the Animals is wonderful to watch.

At 1:30 children can take one of the colorful ribbons attached to the flower bedecked May Pole and join in the traditional May Pole Dance. Throughout the day there will be opportunities for the young ones to make Mom a Mother’s Day present and to explore a real fire engine.

A wide variety of plants and flowers will be for sale, some at prices lower than last year. Included in the plant sale are beautiful hanging baskets. Fresh produce and crafts will also be available for purchase.

Adults will want to check out the selection of items offered at the Silent Auction, “A Bit of Spring.” Always interesting are the guided tours of historic 1721 Old Wye Church, available throughout the day.

Music is a part of the May Fair. This year, the Kent Island Band will serenade visitors from 11 am to 2 pm. The Parish’s own Wye Choral Scholars will sing at 12:30, and master musician Bonnie Forgacs will be delighting listeners at the keyboard off and on throughout the day.

Lunch will be served from 11:30 to 1:30. Guests can select homemade soup and sandwiches or barbecued chicken. Many guests make May Fair Day a completely relaxing day by taking out the barbecued chicken for dinner that night. They can also pick up dessert at the Bake Table stocked with homemade breads and sweets prepared specially for this event by members of the Church.

Wye Parish’s old-fashioned country May Fair is always great fun for everyone! Proceeds go to the outreach programs of the Church. Call 410.827.8484 for further information.
