Academy Art Museum Capital Campaign: Opens New Doors to the Arts

CENTREVILLE  Sarah Severs, RN, CHPN, of Centreville has been promoted to clinical manager of the Hospice Center in Centreville for Compass Regional Hospice, which offers individuals, families and the community “Care on your terms” through comprehensive, professional and compassionate end-of-life care and grief support, serving Queen Anne’s, Kent and Caroline counties.

As clinical manager of the Hospice Center in Centreville, Severs will be responsible for the oversight and supervision of members of the hospice center team, including nursing and certified nursing assistant staff. She also will be responsible the overall functions of the hospice center.

“I love the Hospice Center in Centreville,” Severs said. “It’s a special place. We build special relationships with the patients and their families because we are with them so much. I have been working toward this role for a long time.”

This fall, Compass Regional Hospice will begin its renovations and expansion of its Hope and Healing Center, home of its Grief Services Programs; and its Hospice Center in Centreville, both at 255 Comet Drive. The expansion will bring the facility from six to 10 beds. The expansion is part of Compass Regional Hospice’s capital campaign, “Our Journey, Together,” which seeks to raise $5 million for the organization.

Originally from Chestertown, Severs recently was promoted from the position of field clinical manager, where she was responsible for the oversight and supervision of members of the clinical home care team.

“Sarah is transitioning from the field manager to the center manager because her first love in providing hospice care is providing care to patients in our hospice center – those who need the extra attention and care provided by the hospice center staff,” said Director of Clinical Services Dr. Holly Hayman, DNP, RN, CHPN.  “Sarah is very knowledgeable about hospice care. Her understanding of the Hospice Center in Centreville, the patients and their families, will provide the center staff with guidance toward providing the quality care Compass Regional Hospice is known for.”

Severs received her associates degree in nursing in 2011 from Spartanburg Community College in Spartanburg, S.C. She recently sat for and passed her certified hospice and palliative nurse exam, which is a certification designed for experienced hospice and palliative care nurses and necessitates specific practice hour requirements. Severs has been with Compass Regional Hospice since January 2013 and will celebrate her six-year anniversary with the organization in 2019.

“I love Compass Regional Hospice. I believe we provide the best hospice care around, but there’s always room for improvement in any organization,” Severs said. “My goal is to continue our excellent care, while making sure that if there are ways to improve, we are exploring those options.”

Marcella Konkiel, RN, LMT, has been hired to take on the role of field clinical manager.

“I am thrilled to be back at Compass Regional Hospice, working with hospice patients,” Konkiel said, “as hospice has always resided in my heart, no matter where I’ve been. I’m looking forward to being a part of the hospice team again, and to have the opportunity to touch the lives of others, right here in our local community.”

Konkiel has been a registered nurse for more than 23 years, with prior experience in management as director of nursing with a local agency, serving individuals with disabilities.

Konkiel worked as a nurse case manager for Compass Regional Hospice (formerly Hospice of Queen Anne’s) eight years ago. She returns to Compass Regional Hospice with supervisory experience, along with case manager/delegating nurse experience.

Since 2006, Konkiel also has been a licensed massage therapist, and for the past six years she has been providing therapeutic massage services to medically fragile clients and those clients facing the end of life.

“Marcella’s passion for hospice and end-of-life care has brought her back to Compass Regional Hospice after an eight-year journey exploring other nursing avenues,” Hayman said. “Marci is well versed in the hospice philosophy and will provide support and guidance to the hospice homecare team in her role as its clinical manager. She exhibits compassion, understanding and knowledge, which will enhance the hospice homecare team.”
