Mark Rothko: Selections from the National Gallery of Art

Academy Art Museum, Easton, MD

Through April 22, 2012

This outstanding exhibition of the career of an American master in 15 works is done in collaboration with the National Gallery of Art. Mark Rothko (1903 – 1970) was one of the preeminent artists of his generation and a leader of the Abstract Expressionist movement. The Russian born artist is also closely identified with the New York School of painters that emerged during the 1940s as a new collective voice in American art. During a career that spanned five decades, he created a new and impassioned form of abstract painting. Most of the graphic artwork on view at the Academy Art Museum is on exhibit for the first time.
Kyung-Lim Lee: The Order of Contemplation
Academy Art Museum, Easton, MD
Through April 22, 2012

Kyung-Lim Lee’s abstract drawings and paintings are the result of a complex thought process based upon her consideration of set of 10 Chinese and Korean language characters. These characters represent words and ideas such as Flesh, Bone, Soul, and Resolution. She is interested in language and systems of meaning. Paradoxically, no system is readily evident when viewing her works. The conceptual framework that is essential to the production of the images is not overtly represented. Rather one may be struck by the power of the colors and an overall radiance.

Kyung-Lim Lee was born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1957 and emigrated to the United States with her family in 1972. She studied art at Pratt Institute and graduated with a BFA in drawing in 1983. Since her first solo show in 1993, she has exhibited in many group and solo shows at institutions such as P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, the Bronx
Museum, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art among other venues.

Patrick Henry: Ephemeral Moments
Academy Art Museum
Through April 1, 2012

Patrick Henry has built a reputation over several decades as a quintessential Eastern Shore painter. To view a painting by Patrick Henry is to recognize a bond between the artist, the land he loves and its impact on a regional culture. It is a culture that is slowly fading with the changing landscape, leaving intimate, nostalgic and fleeting reminders of simpler times gone by. Born on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and a graduate of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Henry has been involved with one-man and group exhibitions throughout the mid-Atlantic region since the 1990s. In 2005, The Daily Times newspaper recognized him as Delmarva’s Best Local Artist. The Reginald R. Lewis Museum in Baltimore, presented “Patrick L. Henry: Into the Light,” in 2007 and in 2010 purchased his painting Berlin Milling Company, for its permanent collection. In 2011, Maryland Life Magazine’s Readers Poll selected Patrick Henry as the Lower Eastern Shore Finest Artist. Patrick Henry regularly exhibits at The Globe Theater, Berlin, MD, and at Studio S, in Rehoboth Beach, DE.
