On May 12 at 6 p.m., Adam Goodheart, Director of the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of The American Experience at Washington College, will speak about the first year of the Civil War and sign copies of his new book “1861: The Civil War Awakening.” Goodheart is a noted historian, travel essayist, and critic whose work appears frequently in journals like the “American Scholar,” the “Atlantic Monthly,” ” National Geographic,” and “Smithsonian,” as well as the “Washington Post,” and the “Wall Street Journal.” Most recently he has been writing articles for a series in the “New York Times” entitled “Disunion,” marking the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Goodheart’s contributions recount what was happening on specific days 150 years ago. The cost is $35 for Museum members and $40 for non-members.  His book will be available for purchase.

On May 16 at 6:00 p.m., the Academy Art Museum in Easton is offering a free lecture by Don Boesch, president of University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science.  Dr. Boesch, served on the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.  He will share the Commission’s recommendations and explore the larger impacts of fossil fuel consumption on coastal ecosystems.  The lecture is sponsored by Town Creek Foundation and The Horn Point Laboratory. On Saturday, May 28, 2011, the Academy Art Museum will sponsor an Arts Express bus trip to see a 1:30 p.m. performance of “Follies” at the Kennedy Center.  This new Kennedy Center production of one of James Goldman and Stephen Sondheim’s greatest works, “Follies” is widely acclaimed as the finest song and dance production created about the world of song and dance.
