Visit one of the world’s most creative gardens when Adkins Arboretum offers a bus trip to Chanticleer Garden in Wayne, Pa., on Thurs., Sept. 22.
Called the most romantic, imaginative and exciting public garden in America, Chanticleer originally was known for its majestic trees and verdant lawns. Today the garden located on the Chanticleer estate focuses on plant combinations, containers, textures and colors, often relying more on foliage than on flowers. Participants will see a full summer’s worth of growth, flowers and seeds; a cut-flower garden complemented by a vegetable garden; and courtyards framing unusual combinations of hardy and tropical plants. Vines trail and twine in nooks and crannies, while a woodland garden full of rarities leads to a water garden surrounded by exuberant perennials. Sculptural homemade seats, benches, wrought iron fences and bridges highlight the uniqueness and personal nature of the garden.
The bus departs from the Arboretum at 8 a.m. and returns at 5:30 p.m. The fee of $95 members, $120 general public includes bus transportation, admission, guided garden tour and a buffet lunch at Terrain Garden Center and Café. Registration must be received by Thurs., Sept. 15. Register at www.adkinsarboretum. org or by calling 410.634.2847, ext. 0.
