Adkins Arboretum has announced the winter and spring lineup for its popular Soup ’n Walk programs. Discover green plants in winter, early blooms, ephemeral flowers and sure signs of spring. Following a guided walk through the Arboretum’s woodland, meadows and wetland, enjoy a delicious and nutritious lunch along with a brief lesson about the meal’s nutritional value. Find the Green Plants that Cherish the Warm Winter Sun
Saturday, February 20, 11 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
This program focuses on mosses, cranefly orchid, magnolia and holly leaves, pine and red cedar needles, Christmas fern and the green stems of strawberry bush and greenbrier. Menu: red bean, rice and andouille soup, mixed greens and pear salad, dill rye bread with spinach spread and chocolate brownies with orange glaze.

Saturday, March 20, 11 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
On this walk, look for skunk cabbage, pawpaw, spring beauty and bloodroot. Menu: creamy tomato basil soup, Eastern Shore colorful slaw, rosemary focaccia bread and cherry crisp.
Look Again! The Ephemerals are Fleeting Pink and Yellow Blooms
Saturday, April 24, 11 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
Learn about pink spring beauty, may apple and dogwood blossoms, yellow trout lily, golden groundsel, sassafras and spicebush blossoms, and white beech tree blossoms. Menu: cream of broccoli soup with cheddar, potato salad with orange carrots and red beets, anadama oatmeal bread with hummus spread and oatmeal-raising-molasses-ginger cookies.

Saturday, May 15, 11 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
This walk will focus on mountain laurel, beech tree, tulip tree, black cherry tree blossoms, pink lady’s slipper, Solomon’s seal and may apple fruit. Menu: kale, apple and lentil soup, wheatberry Waldorf salad with walnuts, dilly bread with salmon spread and apple cake.

Adkins Arboretum is a 400-acre native garden and preserve at the headwaters of the Tuckahoe Creek in Caroline County.
