Advanced Anime and Chibi Classes at Arts Council

Instructor Hanna Kingsley returns to the Centre for the Arts with two sessions of classes for those looking to take their anime skills to the next level. Drawing Anime or Chibi is Kawaii classes or experience with Anime techniques are prerequisites for these classes.

In “Chibi takes on Fairytales,” characters will begin their adventures with Japanese fairytales. Using individual stories, students will use their characters to illustrate the plot. Characters may encounter princesses with secrets to tell, a variety of monsters from foxes to goblins and may even meet with grateful sparrows. Each student will have their own illustrated story when complete.

“Chibi Takes on Fairytales” is three consecutive Wednesdays, August 8, August 15 and August 22 from noon to 3 pm. The class is open to ages 12 to 21. Cost is $65 for members and $80 for non-members and there is a $5 additional fee for materials payable to the instructor on the first day of class.

In “Drawing Anime: Fairytales” experienced students will design a character to illustrate their way through Japanese stories. After creating the character, they will be sent up to battle with Momotaro, a popular hero from Japanese folklore, and continue on to meet a cast of monsters ranging from sneaky foxes to demons who steal.

Kingsley is a 2011 graduate of Queen Anne’s County High School and was a recipient of the 2011 Arts Council scholarship. She is currently enrolled at Chesapeake College studying art therapy. She is a regular visitor to the annual KatSuCon fan convention for anime, manga and Japanese culture enthusiasts which is held in Washington D.C.
