Last year, QA residents said no to the government building a huge training center. Those same county residents may be asked to say yes or no to a Walmart or other big box store. The decision could change the face of Queen Anne’s County and Chestertown. Land owner Pete Sheaffer reportedly wants to donate a big parcel of land for some kind of development; perhaps a Walmart. Several county residents are proposing a change in the zoning law requiring full disclosure of any property owner who wants to develop. Sheaffer, meantime, wants to override the square-footage restrictions set currently at 65,000 square feet. Even the smallest Walmarts are substantially larger than that. Chestertown business leaders have repeatedly said a nearby big box store would seriously put a crimp in local businesses.
