ArtScene 2023 – Greatest Shows on the Shore!

ArtScene 2023 served up a tremendous display of creative talent at both high schools the last week in April. The two shows were held on Tuesday, April 25th at QACHS and Thursday, April 27th at KIHS, featuring works of art from all fourteen schools K – 12, with awards going out from art teachers, professional judges, and school principals before packed crowds with over 500 works of art on display at each high school.

Artworks ranged from 2-D drawings, paintings on paper and canvas, mixed-media works, 3-D found object sculptures, printmaking and ceramics. Students created live art in front of the crowd—everything from paintings on easels in progress to students throwing clay on pottery wheels for the crowd.

ArtScene has revitalized the actual “art scene” in Queen Anne’s County since its inception in 2019. This year, both shows showcased unprecedented local, state and national recognitions of student artists at all levels, including record-breaking number of National Art Honor Society inductees, led by chapter sponsors Stephanie Zeiler at QACHS and Andrea Schulte at KIHS, along with a celebratory speech to KIHS students on their Scholastic Art Regional Awards accomplishments from Supervisor of Visual and Performing Arts, Michael Bell.

“Andy Warhol was a Scholastic Art award-winner while still in high school. Amanda Gorman was a Scholastic award-winning poet in HS, to give everyone an idea of the company these teens are in! This year QACPS had 107 entries from 54 students and 11 total awards,” shared Bell. “Congratulations to all students who entered, and to our district’s 1st ever Gold Key Portfolio winner in Talia Crowe!”

Stephanie Zeiler, coming off of her first Scholastic Art National Gold Medalist, was just awarded the NAEA’s National Art Honor Society Sponsor of the Year in San Antonio, TX this April. She was nominated by Bell, who celebrated her in San Antonio, while also delivering a national art presentation on Visual Journaling and facilitating two national hands-on workshops of his own.

Andrea Schulte was also just named QACPS Teacher of the Year, in addition to being nominated recently by Bell for an additional accolade – the Maryland Art Education Association’s (MAEA) Secondary Art Teacher of the Year. Schulte’s art students just broke the 1-million-dollar mark in student art scholarship offers this year for the first time in the history of QACPS, and her students have been accepted into shows nationally this year as well.

So, if you’re creative, and looking to become part of the new game in town that is taking the Eastern Shore by storm, look no further than taking an art class, joining the National Art Honor Society at either award-winning QACPS high school, and entering work in ArtScene next year!
