The Queen Anne’s County Historical Society is proud to announce the opening of its newest exhibit, Astonishing Portraits, Untold Stories: The World of Thomas L. McKenney. This extraordinary exhibition opens on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at the Wright’s Chance Museum, 129 S. Commerce Street, Centreville, Maryland. Visitors are invited to attend during special opening hours from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM and again from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM.

The exhibit will continue throughout October, November, and December, open on the first Saturday of each month from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM, and by appointment. Group tours are warmly welcomed.

Astonishing Portraits, Untold Stories invites visitors to experience the vivid artistry that preserved the likenesses of Native leaders and their families in the early 19th century. These remarkable images survived a difficult and conflicted period in American history, when diplomacy coexisted uneasily with policies of removal. The exhibit does not seek to retell the full story of treaties or displacement, but instead focuses on the salvation of these irreplaceable portraits, ensuring the leaders’ presence endures.

The exhibit is presented as part of Maryland 250, the statewide commemoration of the nation’s 250th anniversary. It is also the proud recipient of a Maryland 250 Commission Inclusion Grant, recognizing its importance in bringing forward diverse voices and perspectives in our shared history.
