Author visits Sudlersville Elementary School

Local author, Carol Franks-Randall, visited Sudlersville Elementary School on Thursday, June 7, 2018.  Franks-Randall, author of the children’s book Jamal and Me, published in 2017, and Playground Heroes, published in June 2018, spent the entire day at the school reading Jamal and Me to students in grades K-4, and engaging the students in grade level writing/art activities.

The program was coordinated by Pamela Renfrow, Library/Media Specialist and Rebecca Van Aken, Reading Specialist, and took place in the school’s Library/Media Center.

In addition to reading aloud, writing and creating posters, Franks-Randall also talked to the students about the process of writing a children’s book. She explained how it takes many drafts to complete a finished product. She encouraged the students to take their creative writing seriously and not be afraid to continue to make their work the best it can be.

“What a valuable experience for students to be able to put a face to an author’s name,” said Ms. Renfrow. “The students were captivated by Dr. Carol Franks-Randall’s reading of her first published book, Jamal and Me. Her visit was educational and inspiring for all 300 Kindergarten through fourth grade students at Sudlersville Elementary School. ”

Thomas Walls, Principal at Sudlersville Elementary School stated, “Dr. Franks-Randall visited Sudlersville Elementary to encourage our students to use their creative minds to write and not only has she encouraged but she has empowered them to think and write creatively.”
