Ballroom Classes Continue This Spring

From the timeless box step of the Foxtrot to the sumptuous rhythms danced to in Bolero, the Centre for the Arts invites you to dance with Championship Dancer Amanda Showell. This award winning dancer instructs students of all levels in all ballroom dances, and has gained a faithful and growing following in Queen Anne’s and Talbot Counties. Whether your interest in dancing is to feel comfortable at important social events, like a wedding, or for a sheer love of music and movement, students will find these classes  easy and fun.

Many remember the foxtrot as the signature dance of Vernon and Irene Castle,  who set their steps to ragtime music in the beginning. More commonly the foxtrot is now often accompanied by big band or swing music. It is the perfect dance for slower tunes, but a treat for those interested in quick rhythms too. Classes for beginners will start of Wednesday, April 28 at 7 p.m.

Both Cuba and Spain boast roots in the lovely slow tempo Bolero dance. Taking many forms since its creation in the late eighteen hundreds, it has been popular in all its forms for over a century. Intermediate level Bolero classes begin at theCentre for the Arts in Centreville, Maryland on April 28 at 8 p.m.  Students will be taught the basic steps, rhythm and technique of the dance and advance on existing skills.

Singles and couples are welcome to these four-week courses. The cost is $50 for members of the Queen Anne’s County Arts Council or $55 for non-members. Advance registration is required by April 21.

Showell has taught at some of the largest dance schools on the east coast, having coached the dance teams of both Princeton University and the University of Delaware. A teacher since 1996, she has won numerous ballroom dance competition titles and trained with World Class dancers such as Peter Eggleton and Charlotte Jorgensen.

The Centre for the arts classes are designed to renew existing artistic interests, and to develop new skills. Registration materials are available at 206 South Commerce St. in Centreville, MD Tuesday-Friday from 9am to 5 pm and Saturday from 10am to 2pm, or by calling 410-758-2520, online, www.arts4u.info, or request via email at exhibit@arts4u.info.
