Bay Better But Not Great

The head of the Queen Anne’s County Watermen’s Association says conditions are improving on the Chesapeake, where debris from Tropical Storm Lee has made it difficult to work on the bay. Moochie Gilmer says watermen have been rounding up their crab pots, many of which were dragged downstream. Gilmer hopes crabbing this fall may be close to normal; however, he says watermen may have to head further down the bay and it is still too dangerous to travel in the dark, which makes it hard to spot debris. Much of the debris came from the Susquehanna River at the northern end of the bay, where most of the floodgates on the Conowingo Dam were opened because of high river levels.
